PH.D.
Postponed. University of Technology Delft. School of Systems
Engineering, Policy Analysis and management. Planned thesis: The
memetics of Policy making: Evolution or Control.
During the final years of my formal education I developed a growing interest in matters concerning computers. This developed from a hobby of building single-floppy linux-firewalls to my current professional record in Information Technology. I believe my education plays a crucial part in my ability to communicate with people from many different educations. For instance as intermediate between engineers and management. The thought-building blocks from my education, like system-and evolution theory in biology, and policy and management theory in my PHD-programma, have proven to be very helpful tools in the IT world.
From May 15th 2002 until now I am working for Tunix network security as
a security consultant. This involves supporting network and
system administators, in the zone where the Tunix firewall secures
the internal and DMZ networks from the internet. This includes firstly educating network
professionals about risks and possibilities of network technologies like VPN's and
tunnels, email management and HTTP browsing and secondly the implementation of these technologies.
The Tunix firewall is a BSD-based security product configured with mainly VI.
As part of the support team I am project manager for some company-wide
projects dealing with the management of firewall alerting and log-streams. The
aim of these projects is to reduce workload and increase the effectiveness and
smartness of monitoring processes of streams of logging and data about security systems.
As part of my job I took some courses in Perl, Ipsec and also created a number
of decently sized perl scripts.
From June 1th 2001 until April 2002 I have worked at KPN as a product
engineer looking into the snmp functionality of the internal
KPN data-network. This involved the second line support and
design of network management tooling. I was part of
a team that designed monitoring systems using unix servers with
programs like HP-openview. CiscoWorks 2000 and so on. As such we
worked with SQL servers, Sun Solaris on Sparc machines, HP Ux on HP
servers and Linux. The aim was to effectively monitor and administer
Cisco, Nortel and 3com switches. To do so we worked with the snmp protocol
managing snmp implementation and change projects. My role explicitly involves some
interfacing between experts and 'customers' within the
organization. My technical expertise concerns explicitly Unix in
general, network health management, firewalling, and scripting.
From April 2000 until may 15th 2001 I have been working at TDV
Systeembeheer (www.tdv.nl) where I installed and maintained Windows NT
and 2000
networks. I also managed some Cisco isdn routers and
linux lrp firewalls. In
addition I have helped with problem solving and level two helpdesk
problems, including some Novell networks. I have been involved in
structuring the organization of the helpdesk and the organization
as a whole, especially the information flow between helpdesk,
system engineering and sales.
From
februari-1999 until september 1999 I have worked as a helpdesk
person at the School of Systems Engineering, Policy analysis and
Management from the University of Technology in Delft. There I
worked with Novell netware 4.11 intranetware. managing windows 95 and NT
workstations and printers using Zenn and Norton
ghost.
As
editor and founder of JOM-EMIT I have over three years experience
with the management and organisation of an online journal that is
dependent on the cooperation of professionals.
During my PHD I have learned a
number of special skills that could proof to be useful in specific
situations.
My strengths lie in a
combination of being able to quickly analyse and grasp new things
and situations and a strong creativity. This enables me to be
resourceful and innovative. Although many people take it to be a
weakness I like it best to be direct and honest. I seem to have
the strong desire to delve into new things and to take initiative.
I can handle the organization of procedures, documentation and
rules when people have to work together smoothly. The ideal
job for me includes the responsibility to manage my own little
patch, but not in isolation. It includes colleagues with similar
interests and attitudes in an environment where there is room for
improvisation and innovation. Keeping and breeding snakes,
lizards, frogs and fish in ecological tanks. Photographing and
researching trees and making a website and webserver.
Making music and reading evolutionary theory and philosophy.
Getting the most out
of computers and networks, and doing the impossible. Loving my family.
Most of my computer skills stem from reading and trial and
error (hacking and seeing what works).
I do not have
have any certification, just a great deal of experience: I believe
no certification can make up for that. I would
be willing to get certification if needed for my work.
My two main interests in IT are the management of security and
the management of an efficient IT department.
In the past
year I did take some courses: Tcp/ip; Perl Ipsec and Tunix firewall.
I have experience with Novell netware 4.11 and 5, Microsoft windows Exchange, 2000
- server 2000, -workstation 2000, XP, NT4, -98, -95, Windows DNS, Citrix, VPN's (ipsec,
pptp, openvpn), Linuxes, FreeBsd, BsdOs, Cisco switches, routers and pix, Ldap,
Sendmail, Bind, and deep knowledge of many forms of firewalling.
I have
some pretty good understanding of protocols like HTTP, SMTP,
SNMP, DNS and many others. I speak some XML, HTML, Perl.
I have published some internet howto's with Linux journal:
Meet OpenVPN (2004);
Exchange Functionality for Linux (2003);
Caldera Volution Messaging Server: A
Product Review (2002) and also
some other Linux howto's on my home-site.
I am the proud owner-designer-maker of bomengids.nl: the free online
tree guide for North-European trees. With 5000 tree-photo's online.
Special
skills
I
can help groups of people or individuals to systematically develop
a strategy. I have used and worked with a consultant management
tool called the Strategy Evaluation Method (SEM); developed by my
Promotor Prof. Jan Koolhaas.
My
PHD included the study of many aspects of policy analysis.
Therefore I have knowledge of policy analysis instruments like
scenario's as well as of different management methods to steer and
measure performance.
